I tried everything from showering twice a day to using multiple deodorants, but nothing seemed to work. Having reached a point of complete frustration I felt utterly clueless about what to do.

I decided to do some research and find a solution to my problem, reading up on the causes of body odour and how to combat it.

Few Tips to Reduce Body Odour

The first step in tackling body odour is understanding what causes it.

Body odour is the unpleasant smell that can occur when sweat mixes with bacteria on the skin. While sweat itself is odourless, the bacteria that break down sweat can produce an unpleasant smell. The armpits are the hotbed for sweat, bacteria and a bad odour. To combat body odour, you need to reduce the amount of sweat your body produces and kill the bacteria that cause the odour.

A few healthy lifestyle changes can go a long way.

I switched to cotton clothes, which are breathable and absorbent, and started carrying a handkerchief with me to wipe away excess sweat. I also made it a point to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep myself cool.

A good antiperspirant is a good investment.

One that contained aluminium chloride which helps to reduce sweat production. I applied it after a bath and after washing off the sweat. It worked like a charm. An antiperspirant can reduce sweat and a deodorant helps one feel fresh. Now, I had to deal with the bacteria that caused the odour.

The bacteria problem.

I started using an antibacterial soap to wash my body and a foot powder to keep my feet dry and fresh. I also started using a deodorising spray on my clothes and shoes to eliminate any lingering odour.

It’s important to be mindful of your diet.

Certain foods, such as garlic and onions, can contribute to body odour, so it’s a good idea to avoid them if you’re prone to sweating. On the other hand, foods that are high in chlorophyll, such as spinach and parsley, can help to neutralise odours.

Carrying a small bottle of essential oils or perfume.

Use them to feel fresh all through the day. You can also wear clothing made from moisture-wicking fabrics, which are designed to pull moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry and comfortable.

Give natural remedies a try.

For example, baking soda can be used as a natural deodorant, as it helps to absorb moisture and neutralise odours. Make a paste with water and a small amount of baking. Apply this paste to your underarms or other areas where you tend to sweat more. You can also try using apple cider vinegar as a natural deodorant, as it has antibacterial properties that can help to kill the bacteria that cause body odour.

With these changes, I was able to tackle my body odour problem effectively. No longer worrying about people avoiding me or wrinkling their noses in my presence, I could step out with confidence.
